As you can see, each individual on our staff is an artist, musician, songwriter or “straight-up audio junkie” by nature. It is our passion for excellence that has attracted all sorts of projects & artists to us since day one. Regardless of budget, each and every project is treated with the same care and priority as if it was our very own.

Scott Slagle – owner/engineer/producer

Scott is a 20+ year veteran of the Carolinas music scene. During those years, Scott worked as a freelance engineer / producer at The Bassment, Chung King, D&D, DARP, Firehouse, The Hit Factory, HUSH Studios, Reflection Sound Studios and The Sonic Cafe’. In large part, Scott cut his teeth on the sound of “East-Coast” Hip-Hop, working alongside industry heavyweights such as Eddie Sancho, Tone & Poke, Kieran Walsh and “Prince” Charles Alexander.

In 1998, Scott opened the doors of Asylum Digital Recording Studio and has worked extensively with indie and major label acts of all genres. With hard work and a genuine respect for the craft, he completed a new studio build in late 2012.

Scott is a founding member of Electric Mountain, a team of producers that consists of Stephen Barrett, Dave Haire, Christopher Holston & Jason Michel. Scott is 1/5 of the band Super Ape (handling keyboards, percussion, production & programming) & is a voting member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES).

Joel Mullis – engineer/producer

Joel Mullis is a Charlotte native and veteran of the local music scene. Throughout the 1990’s, Joel was lead guitarist for the bands it could be nothing… and Grass Appeal. After earning his degree from Full Sail University in 2002, he went on to spend the next decade in Atlanta as a record producer and engineer.

He began his recording career as an Intern at Tree Sound Studios where he worked with artists like Ludacris, The Neptunes, Shinedown and Faith Evans. In 2003 Joel was offered a position at (the legendary) Billy Hume’s Zone Studios. In his 4 years at The Zone, Joel was immersed in “Dirty South Rap”. He engineered & mixed hit records for such acts as The Ying Yang Twins (Including the Whisper Song), Pitbull, E-40, David Banner and Rehab, while continuing to produce albums for regional rock acts.

In 2007, Joel became a freelance producer and mixer. He continued to hone his skills in urban music, while devoting more time to producing rock albums. As a freelance engineer he has mixed hits for Gucci Mane, Yung Joc, Nikki Minaj, VIC and many others. Joel has also produced albums for a wide range of independent rock bands, from ATL’s Attractive Eighties Women and Tx/Rx, to Wilmington’s The Hottness and Charlotte’s own Lamb Handler.
Joel also became a contributing member of 340 Music, a Hip-Hop production team that specializes in combining programming w/ live instrumentation. With 340 Music, Joel was able to combine his talents as a musician with his knowledge of Hip-Hop, and has written or produced tracks for artists like Soulja Boy and Deuce Ducartier. His body of work has led to numerous sync placements & licensing opportunities for clients (including MTV, MTV Europe, The Oxygen Network, Fox Sports, Intel & more…).

In 2012 Joel decided to move back to the Charlotte area, and joined the staff at Asylum Digital in the summer of 2013.

Shawn Milligan – assistant engineer/producer

Shawn “S. Millie” Milligan is the newest member to the Asylum Digital team. In 2007, he started recording regional artists in the Charleston, South Carolina area. After deciding (in 2010) that sound would be his career path, he moved to Orlando, Florida to study the recording arts.

While in the Orlando area, Shawn also worked as a freelance engineer at both KDS Studios and Green Room Studios. There, his focus was primarily on the sound of “modern” Hip-Hop and R&B – mixing records for Maybach Music Group, 1017 Brick Squad & Atlantic Records. Shawn soon earned his degree at Full Sail in late 2013, and in the summer of 2014 joined the staff of Asylum Digital as assistant engineer.

Shawn is also 1/2 of the production team Millie & Frazier & an in-house producer for Aces Nation.

Jason Michel – sound design/producer

Jason has more than 20 years of audio production and analysis experience for companies such as Media Evolved, Muzak, OEM and UAV. Jason is also part owner of the rock club Snug Harbor.

Jason’s musical aesthetic covers the full spectrum as he is both bassist in Super Ape (psych rock) & creates his own avant-garde works under the name Elroy Sugarthroat. He is also a founding member of Electric Mountain, a team of producers that consists of Stephen Barrett, Dave Haire, Christopher Holston & Scott Slagle.

In his spare time, Jason dabbles in videography and installation art.

Stephen Barrett – graphic artist/web design/producer

Stephen “Steve Thuro” Barrett started out as part of the areas hip-hop/drum & bass DJ scene in the late 90’s.
Scott saw Stephen perform at the 2002 DMC Southeast semi-finals. Impressed by his turntabalism and ear for perfection, Scott soon began to share with Stephen the fundamentals of studio recording and production.

Since then Stephen has grown tremendously as an artist and has become very skilled at producing hip-hop and electronic music in general. Stephen is a founding member of Electric Mountain, a team of producers that consists of Scott Slagle, Dave Haire, Christopher Holston & Jason Michel. Stephen also handles drum machine & keyboards in the band Super Ape.

Stephen is also an amazing graphic artist /web desingner and is instrumental to the success of our 2D graphics wing. We feel that Stephen’s design work speaks for itself, making a strong statement with a clean aesthetic. His experience includes years of solid work (with a professional design education) & he can help you design your complete album layout and/or all of your promotional materials (handbills, flyers, posters, t-shirts, etc).

Stephen is also a great choice for installation pieces & also the creator of Mental Floss Designs, a stylish combination of both digital and personal works.

Shante Slagle – photographer

Shante has always been entranced by art and its affects on people, society and culture. Whether observing, creating or relishing in it, art is a major part of Shante. She incorporates it into all aspects of life, be it work, family or fun, to try and capture that single moment to convey a message or idea to be remembered.
In 2014, we are proud to mention that Shante has begun to apply her skills in the (southeastern) film & television industry.
